Pune Dams | Pune: Rajgurunagar Celebrates as Kalmodi Dam Fills to 100% Capacity

Pune: Pune Dams | Rajgurunagar, in the western part of Khed taluka, is celebrating as Kalamodi dam reaches its full capacity and water begins to flow from its spillway into the Arala river basin. This marks the first dam in Pune district to achieve 100 percent capacity this year, bringing relief to the region’s water needs. The overflowing water from Kalamodi dam will also contribute to increasing the water storage in the Chaskaman Dam.

The significance of this dam extends beyond Rajgurunagar, benefiting the Satgaon plateau in Ambegaon taluka and the villages in the western part of Khed taluka. Late on Monday night, as the dam reached its full capacity, water started gushing out from the spillway, signaling a successful fill-up. Kalamodi dam has consistently achieved full capacity since 2010, thanks to the increased rainfall in its catchment area over the past eight days.

With 1.51 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of water stored in the dam, the Arala riverbed has already experienced some flooding. The dam authorities have issued a warning to the villages along the banks of the river to remain vigilant, as rapid discharge may occur if the rainfall intensifies. Last year, the dam reached its full capacity on July 11. Since June 1, the dam area has recorded a total of 428 mm of rainfall, bringing satisfaction to farmers in the western part of the taluka.

The filling of Kalamodi dam to its maximum capacity is an encouraging sign for the region’s water resources. As the water flows downstream and merges with the Chaskaman Dam, the overall water storage in the area will improve. This bodes well for agricultural activities, water supply, and the overall well-being of the local communities that rely on these water sources.
