Police alertness prevents Child Marriage attempt

Despite child marriage being an offense, there are some areas especially villages in India, where such illegal activities are still being carried out. In such an incident, a 16-year old girl was being married to a 28-year-old man and the police cleverly prevented from such an act to take place.

This incident took place near Mumbai-Ahmednagar Highway on Tuesday. A case has been registered in Virai police station in regard to such incident against the to-be in-laws of the bride who were reportedly involved in this case.

According to Deputy superintendent of police, Jayant Bajabale, an organization named Sevabhavi Sanstha informed police that there is a child marriage going on in Hanuman Temple of Bavhkhal Pada, near the Mumbai- Ahmednagar highway. As soon as police got information about this, Police rushed to the spot and stopped the ongoing marriage when they saw the 16-year-old girl being married to a 28-year-old man without the consent of the bride.

Police immediately released the 16-year old bride. A case has been registered against other 25 accused who are said to be involved in this offense. Police have arrested three accused along with the groom in such case.

A 28-year-old groom-Vasant Rathod, his mother Jhimabai Rathod and bride’s father Vijay Jadhav (42-year-old) residents of Banjara colony, Dhaniv Bag were arrested by Police as well 25 other accused presents at the time of marriage under 2006, Prevention of Child Marriage Act.

Police have filed the case against Vasant Rathod, Jhimabai Rathod, Vijay Jadhav and is still probing into the case. Further action will take on remaining accused soon such was said by senior Police inspector Ghansham Adhav.

Even after knowing child marriage is an offense, people in villages and other areas do not hesitate to commit such offense, is it the failure of the strictness of Indian laws or is it the literacy rates of India which are playing a role in it?
