PM Modi bids emotional farewell to Ghulam Nabi Azad in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday bid farewell to the outgoing MPs in Rajya Sabha. Azad, the Leader of Opposition, was one among the four members retiring from the Upper House this month.

While bidding farewell to Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad in Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister got emotional and said, “Posts come, the high office comes, power comes and how to handle these, one must learn from Ghulam Nabi Azad Ji. I would consider him a true friend.”

Recalling a 2006 incident in which some Gujarati tourists were killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi recalled how he, as then CM of the state, had received a call from then J&K CM Ghulam Nabi Azad expressing his concern over the issue.

PM Modi said that Azad’s concern was just like that of a family member. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Ghulam Nabi Azad was the first person to call him after the attack.

The Prime Minister, while referring to Azad’s contribution to the politics and the House, said: “You are retiring from the House, but I will not let you retire and my doors are open for you and will need your contribution and advice”.

Presently, Azad serves as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and will be retiring from the House on February 15, 2021.
