New Delhi : The price of petrol and diesel is much cheaper than our neighbouring countries in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and China. Petrol prices in Rajasthan have crossed Rs 100 and are now approaching a century in many cities. Petrol and diesel are at an all-time high in many parts of the country, including Delhi-Mumbai. On the other hand, if we look at the neighbouring countries, Pakistan is getting petrol at half the rate from India.

Petrol-diesel is much cheaper than India in poor countries like Bhutan, Nepal. The cheapest petrol in the whole world is Rs 1.46 a liter in Venezuela according to the Indian rupee and the most expensive in Hong Kong is Rs 172.66 a liter.

On February 15 on the globalpetrolprices.com website, petrol and diesel prices were as follows…

Fuel in India is so expensive because it is taxed high. Different states charge different taxes. Apart from levying excise duty of central government, state governments also earn from you by levying VAT i.e. Value Added Tax. The VAT tax rate of the states also varies. The Rajasthan government charges the highest VAT in the entire country. Here 38 percent tax is levied on petrol and 28 percent on diesel.
