Om blood bank gave expired blood

Pune: NP NEWS 24 –  In a shocking incident happened on yesterday afternoon, Om blood bank in Mangalwar Peth area gave expiry dated blood bag to the customer. When the customer questioned to bank staff, they said that it was a label mistake. Finally, the customer has filed a written complaint to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Saturday.

The complainant Yogesh Lasure resident of Baramati has admitted his wife in city-based private hospital for viral fever treatment. The treating doctor on Friday asked Lasure to bring a bag of blood from a nearby blood bank. “I rushed to the Om blood bank and purchased B positive blood bag and handed over to the doctors. After some tine doctor told me that the blood bag has mentioned the expiry date of 10th October. Doctors refused to give the blood” said Yogesh Lasure, the complainant.

Then Lasure went back to Om blood bank to inquire about the blood. When he asked to the staff regarding it, the staff said that it was a ‘label mistake’. In spite of mentioning the date on 10th November, it was printed 10th October.

After not satisfied with the blood bank answer, Lasure directly moved to the FDA office. He filed the written complaint against blood bank.

When asked to Vidyadhar Jawadekar, FDA joint commissioner (drug) he confirmed that the complaint has been received. “A customer has given the complaint against Om blood bank for giving expired blood to him. Prima facie it appears to be label mistake. But our investigation is on and find out whether it was label mistake or expired blood. If it is label mistake it’s too sheer negligence and we will take strict action against blood bank”
