Modi Government denies to accept married couple of ‘Same Sex’ as family

New Delhi : The central government has opposed gay marriages in the Delhi High Court. The government said on Thursday that the same-sex couple living together as partners and not having sex can not be compared to an Indian family.

During the hearing in the Delhi High Court on the plea seeking permission for homosexual marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Central Government said that all the petitions filed in the matter will be filed today. A bench headed by Rajiv Sahai Endlaw today allowed the Central government to be a party to the case. The next hearing will be on 8 April.

The central government has presented its stand in the court in response to a petition seeking to approve gay marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act. Several petitions have been filed in the High Court seeking approval to gay marriage. Among them are two women who have been living together for the last several years and have demanded to approve gay marriage.

On behalf of the Central Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had said that our legal system, society and culture does not recognize marriage between gay couples.
