Like China, Dog Meat is Eaten In This Indian State, Govt. Puts A Ban On the Sale & Consumption

Kohima : The Nagaland government on Friday banned the sale and consumption of dog meat in the state. This is an important decision amid concerns about cruelty to animals. State Parliamentary Affairs Minister N Cronu said that the decision to ban commercial import and trade of dogs and sale of dog meat was taken in the state cabinet meeting. The ban is on both cooked and raw meat of the dog.

Government spokesperson Cronu said that the state cabinet has taken this decision in view of the dangers of bringing dogs from other states for consumption and in accordance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. He informed that the government has also decided to ban commercial import and trade of pigs with immediate effect.

He said that after the outbreak of swine flu in the region, the state had already banned the import of pigs and now the cabinet has also given its approval.
