Lieutenant General S K Saini takes over the reins of the southern army

Lieutenant General SK Saini, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, assumed the command of the Southern Army on  01 October 2018. On his first day in office, the General Officer laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, Pune to pay homage to the martyrs and later reviewed an impressive Guard of Honour at the Headquarters. The current assignment of the General Officer is a testimony of his continued dedication to service which began with his commissioning in June 1981. Prior to the current assignment, he was Director General (Manpower and Personnel Services) at Army Headquarters, New Delhi.

An alumni of Sainik School Kapurthala, National Defence Academy Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy Dehradun, he was commissioned into 7 JAT in June 1981. He has commanded his Battalion, a Mountain Brigade, a Counter Insurgency Force in J&K and a Corps in the Western Theatre.

His staff experience includes tenanting the appointments of Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, General Staff Officer-1 (Operations) of an Infantry Division and Director in Military Operations Branch at the Army Headquarters.  He has also been Brigadier General Staff of a Corps deployed in J&K, Deputy Director General (Strategy) in the Perspective Planning Directorate and Deputy Director General Key Result Area Monitoring Cell, COAS Secretariat.  Besides, he has been a Weapons Instructor in the National Security Guards Training Centre, Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College, New Delhi and Commandant of the Indian Military Academy.  In his last appointment as the Director General (Manpower and Personnel Services) he initiated a number of significant refinements in Human Resource polices of all ranks.

The General Officer is a graduate of the Army Command and Staff Course at the Staff College, Camberley in UK and has studied at the Royal College of Military Science, Shrivenham, UK.  He is also a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, Bangladesh, where his research paper was adjudged as the best research work. He holds three Masters Degrees in Defence and Strategic Studies. The General Officer is an avid reader and writer.

The Officer has also served as the Deputy Chief Military Personnel Officer in the UN Mission in Iraq-Kuwait, attended an exercise on peacekeeping conducted by the Global Peace Operations Initiative in Mongolia and a counter terrorism exercise in Australia. He is also the Colonel of the JAT Regiment.

The General Officer is married to Mrs Neena Saini. The lady is a graduate from Delhi University. She has a natural flair for creative arts like Interior Designing, Decoration and Costume Styling.  Mrs Neena Saini has always focused on genuine welfare and empowerment of wives of the Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks. She has made efforts in improving the Vocational Training Centres and health care of the families.  She has willingly shouldered welfare responsibilities of Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) activities in many stations.  She has been the Chairperson of Vocational Training Centre and AWWA Hostel at Delhi.

The General Officer and the first lady were warmly welcomed to Pune Station by all ranks on 01 October 2018.
