Kareena Kapoor’s Grandmother no more

87-year-old Krishna Raj Kapoor, the widow of the legendary Bollywood actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor and grandmother of Kareena Kapoor passed away in Mumbai on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Krishna breathe for the last time on Monday around 5 am, she died due to cardiac arrest. The last rites will be performed at Chembur crematorium.

Her son Randhir Kapoor told PTI said, “My mother passed away at about 5 am today due to cardiac arrest…old age was another factor. We are deeply saddened by her demise.”

Krishna Malhotra who had married Raj Kapoor in May 1946 and they had five children – actors Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor and daughters Rima Kapoor-Jain and Ritu Nana. Actors Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Karisma Kapoor were her grandchildren.

She was the sister of renowned actors Rajendra Nath, Prem Nath and Narendra Nath. Her sister Uma is married to veteran actor Prem Chopra.

In the last few years, Krishna attended the Kapoors’ annual Christmas brunch without fail and she regularly attended her children and grandchildren’s film screenings – she was last spotted at a special screening of 102 Not Out starring Rishi Kapoor. In addition to her Mumbai diaries, Krishna Raj Kapoor also featured in family vacation albums abroad.

One Twitter user posted, “Hearing of demise of film industry one of the legends spend big billions of era/time which values to #KrishnaRajKapoor and my condolences to Kapoor family who are the part of her.” While another wrote, “Mrs. Krishna Raj Kapoor is no more. She was an extremely graceful lady and a fantastic host. Will miss the occasional interactions that she used to have with us. RIP. #krishnarajkapoor #KrishnaRajKapoor.”
