India to Become Non-Permanent Member of UNSC For the Eighth Time, Pakistan Raises Concern

New York : India is set to become a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 8th time on Wednesday. Special voting arrangements have been made at the United Nations Headquarters due to restrictions related to COVID-19. India is almost certain to join the Security Council of 15 countries as a temporary member. India is a candidate for a temporary seat from the Asia-Pacific category for the term 2021-22. The term of the country as a non-permanent member will be for 2021-22. The 193-member United Nations General Assembly will hold elections for its 75th session for the president, temporary members of the Security Council and members of the Economic and Social Council.

India’s victory is being decided as it is the only candidate for the only seat in the group. The 55-member Asia-Pacific group, including China and Pakistan, unanimously supported India’s candidature in June last year. The General Assembly elects five out of 10 temporary members every year for a two-year term.

Pakistan has expressed serious concern over this. It says that it is not a matter of happiness but of worry. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mohammad Qureshi said that India’s intention to become a temporary member of UNSC is a matter of concern for Pakistan. He said that India has always rejected proposals to be raised from this platform, especially the issues of Kashmir.
