Helmet compulsory in Pune from New Year

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE Pune commissioner has taken a bold decision to stop in number of deaths in road accident in Pune City. This decision is regarding the use of Helmet. In the coming year the Punekars will have to wear the helmet as the police has decided to implement the court’s decision.  This decision will be implemented from 1st January 2019.

It is important to take in to consideration that earlier same kind of decision was taken. But when people protested against the decision the implementation of the same was stopped. Now this decision has been made by the new Commissioner of Police. It is possible that Punekar’s might need to protest against the decision all over again.

Earlier in 2016 the government tried to implement the same rule. Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said in 2016 that ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ rule in Maharashtra, had said on that the rule would be implemented across the state, but put the onus on implementing it on the traffic department. In the same breath, he clarified that the rule would not be forced upon two-wheeler riders, but would be implemented by counselling and creating awareness—which actually is what has been happening in Pune for years.

He then said, “First, the Supreme Court clearly ruled that helmets should be mandatory for two-wheeler riders. And now, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has said that the state government is within its purview to implement the ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ norm,”
