Govt to provide free gas connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

NEW DELHI: With an aim to provide clean fuel to around one crore families, who are still not having domestic LPG connection, the Central government will be providing them with free connections in two years under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

Information about the free gas connection was also mentioned in the General Budget 2021 which was presented on February 1. The plan has already been prepared regarding the same. The process will be executed in the next two years.

Secretary of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Tarun Kapoor stated on Sunday that it was declared through Budget 2021 that 1 crore people will be provided free LPG connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). He also mentioned that an amount of Rs 1,600 will be spent on each connection.

Oil Secretary Tarun Kapoor stated that the government is working to provide gas connections to the migrants first as the migrants travel from one place to another because of which they do not have many documents. The scheme will help migrants to get the connection without any hassle. The government has instructed oil companies to provided gas connections to migrants on the basis of any single government ID.

HOW TO APPLY FOR FREE GAS CONNECTION

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana on May 1, 2016  in which 50 million LPG connections were provided to families under below poverty line (BPL).

For the connection, a KYC form needs to be submitted in LPG centres nearby. The form can be downloaded from the official website of Ujjwala Yojana or you can take it directly from the LPG centre.

While applying, it’s important to mention the weight of the cylinder you need. Women can ask for a 14.2 kg cylinder or a 5 kg cylinder.

The necessary documents required for the free LPG gas connection are a BPL card, Rashan card, Aadhaar card, voter Id, passport size photo and, bank statement.

Under this scheme, over 8 crore connections have been provided till now and in India and the number of people with LPG gas connections has reached 29 crore.
