The penguin died on August 22, 2018, in the Zoo hospital. It survived for 7 long days and finally died during night hours. Even after proper treatment, favorable conditions made by the zoo authorities, as a matter of surprise, could not help the penguin survive. It was found dead during the night.

The Humboldt Penguin Management at VJBU & zoo had created a favorable environment for the baby penguin and its proper care was being taken by its parents, breeding pair molt (male) and Flipper (female).

A post-mortem was conducted by the team of professors of Bombay Veterinary College, Parel consisting of a pathologist, microbiologist and an Avian specialist on August 23 at 9:30 am in the Zoo hospital.

As per the reports of preliminary examination during post-mortem, it was revealed that there were newborn anomalies like yolk sac retention, liver dysfunction as a major cause of unfortunate death of the chick.

Multiple references on the management of Penguins show that 60 % mortality is expected in chicks and egg due to various reasons like infertility of egg, failure to hatch on its own, malpositioning of chick inside the egg, check deformity, inability of parents to feed the chick, yolk sac retention, residual album, etc.

Further, the association of Zoos and Aquariums Species survival plan and a scientific paper “Artificial incubation and hand rearing of Humboldt Penguins” has mentioned a 32-35 % mortality rate for chicks less than 30 days of age and also the first three months are crucial for the survival of penguin chick.

The chances of the death of a penguin are within the first three months and it should be taken good care of. However, the parents of the chick are in good condition and are being taken care of by the Zoo authorities.
