Former Congress corporator’s brother Sunit Waghmare arrested on rape charges

MUMBAI: Lonavala police arrested Sunit Waghmare, brother of former Congress corporator and Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Raju Waghmare on charges of rape.

A woman from Waghmare’s area lodged a complaint against rape, intimidation and cheating under the pretext of marrying her.

According to the complaint filed in the case, the victim alleged that she came in contact with Sunit Waghmare while looking for a job. Sunit promised to give her a job and befriended her on Facebook.

A few days later, Sunit promised to marry the victim after taking a divorce from her current wife. Sunit took the victim to a hotel in Lonavla by luring her into marriage and raped her in the hotel. The woman alleged that the duo had been in a live-in-relationship for few days.

Meanwhile, Sunit later refused to divorce his wife and stopped answering the victim’s call. The woman then lodged a case against Sunit Waghmare at the Bhoiwada police station for cheating on her. The case was transferred from Bhoiwada police station to Lonavla police station. Lonavla police then arrested Sunit on charges of rape.

On the other hand, Congress spokespersons Sachin Sawant and Raju Waghmare have said that there is no connection between Sunit Waghmare and the Congress party. In the 2017 municipal elections, Sunit Waghmare was expelled from the party for anti-party activities.
