Floods worsen situation in Assam, 3.4 lakh people affected in 14 districts



Guwahati : The flood situation in Assam worsened on Friday and water spread over a large area of two more districts. As a result, 1.70 lakh more people were affected. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) gave this information in a report.

The report said 3,41,837 people from 32 revenue areas in 14 districts were affected by the floods. The flood waters also spread to two new districts – Udalgiri and Dibrugarh – from Thursday. Floods and landslides have so far killed 64 people across the state.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Center has forecast heavy rainfall at various places in Assam and neighboring Meghalaya. Sanjay O Neel Shaw, deputy director of the center, said heavy rains were expected in some places on Saturday.

ASDMA said Dhemaji is the worst affected district with about 1.3 lakh affected by floods. After this, 75,000 people in Lakhimpur and 63,000 people in Barpeta have been affected due to water. 724 villages in 14 districts have been affected by the floods and 46,797 hectares of crops have been damaged.
