Eight people cheated on the pretext of non-payment of power bill in Kondhwa

Pune : NpNews24 Online  – Pune Crime | Frauds are committed across the country by sending messages saying that electricity supply would be cut off due to non-payment of power bills. Then the recipient is asked to download an app, following which money is withdrawn from their account without their knowledge. (Pune Crime )

In a similar incident, eight people from Kondhwa have been duped to the tune of Rs 6.5 lakh.

A 44-year-old woman has lodged a complaint at the Kondhwa Police Station. A man identifying himself as Kumar called the complainant and said he was speaking from MSEDCL. He asked her to pay the power bill. He further threatened her that if the bill was not paid, her electricity connection would be cut off.

When she told the caller that she had paid the bill two-three days ago, the accused asked her to download an app to view the bill receipt online saying that the amount of the bill paid by her was not visible. She downloaded the link. It showed that the bill was paid. She was then asked to download another app to see if the electricity bill amount paid by her has been credited to their account. Accordingly, she downloaded it and filled in the bank details. The accused also asked her to deposit Rs 100 through the app. (Pune Crime )

Rs 100 was deposited and the person on the line cut the phone. Later, she got a call from IDBI Bank asking her to identify the recipient of Rs16,000 from her account. They told her that they got notifications that an unknown person was repeatedly trying to withdraw money from her account. Then she realised that she was cheated. She approached the cyber police station and lodged the complaint.

It was revealed that seven other people in Kondhwa were also cheated in the same way. Thus, a total of eight persons have been cheated of Rs 6.35 lakhs.
