Earthquake of 6.7 Magnitude Killed 18 in Turkey, More than 500 Injured

NP NEWS 24 : New Delhi : The earthquake in turkey has caused great destruction. About 18 people died in Turkey due to the earthquake on Saturday, more than 500 people were injured. The magnitude of this earthquake on the Richter scale has been measured at 6.7. About 10 buildings were destroyed by the earthquake.

 

The highest damage due to this earthquake has occurred in Eastern Elazig Province. The tremor were felt 15 times during the earthquake, which spread panic among the people.  Earthquake tremors were also felt in Turkey’s neighboring countries Iraq, Syria, Lebanon.  However, there is no news of loss in these countries.

Health minister Fahrettin Koca, who travelled to the afflicted area, said 13 people were killed in Elazig, including two people who suffered heart attacks, and five others died in Malatya. A total of 553 people were hurt, including 11 who were in serious condition.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that all measures were being taken to “ensure that the earthquake that occurred in Elazig and was felt in many provinces is overcome with the least amount of loss”.

Interior Minister Suleman Soylu said, “No one is trapped under the rubble in Malta, but search rescue efforts are underway for 30 civilians.”

The quake was also felt in other provinces including Adana, Osmaniye, Tunceli and Hatay. In addition, northern Syrian regions including Idlib, Azaz, Al-Bab, Jarabulus, Afrin and Tal Abyad also felt tremors.

This is not the first quake to hit Turkey in 2020. A 5.4-magnitude quake jolted western province of Manisa on Wednesday. And Ankara was rattled by a 4.5-magnitude quake Thursday.
