Donald Trump’s Diwali tweet gets him in trouble, forgets to wish Hindu

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – The Festival of lights which is Diwali was celebrated in White house by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday. He participated in the ceremonial lighting of diyas. But as his hobby is to get into the controversies he has managed to pull one in Diwali celebration as well. As, he forgot to greet Hindus – the largest community in the world that celebrates the festival of Diwali – in his tweet.

Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted: “Today, we gathered for Diwali, a holiday observed by  throughout the United States & around the world.” As people online pointed out that he flagrantly omitted Hindus — a billion people throughout the world for whom Diwali is a major holiday — the tweet was deleted, only to be replaced by a second one that again left out Hindus.

Finally, President Trump posted a third tweet in which he mentioned that he was honoured to host a celebration of Diwali, a “Hindu festival of Lights.”  He added in his tweet, “Very, very special people.”

While Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains do observe Diwali, Hindus are among the largest religious group to celebrate the holiday. More than 2 million people in the U.S. identify as Hindu, according to Pew, which projects there will be about 2.5 million Hindus by 2020.

Trump repeatedly spoke of his close ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, “We love your country. And I have great, great respect, as you know, for your Prime Minister Modi.” And he told Sarna, “So please give him my warmest regards. We will be talking to him soon. The United States has deep ties to the nation of India and I am grateful for my friendship with Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

Over the years, Diwali is being celebrated by the Indian Americans in Pentagon and the State Department. For the past several years, Diwali is also being celebrated at the US Capitol by Rep and Senators, being hosted by India Caucus.
