Dead donor uterus gives birth to a baby

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – World’s first baby born to a woman with a uterus transplanted from a deceased donor in Brazil. In September, Sao Paulo, Brazil, conducted a breakthrough operation where they transplanted a dead women’s uterus to give birth.

In 2017, the 32-year-old woman became pregnant through in vitro fertilisation seven months after the transplant. The donor was a 45-year-old woman who had three children and died of a stroke.

The receiver gave birth by caesarean section as well as doctors have removed the womb, partly so the woman would no longer have to take anti-rejection medicines. Nearly a year later, mother and baby are both healthy.

Previously eleven womb transplant births were operated in the same hospital but via a living donor who usually is relatives or friends.

Experts also believe uterus transplant via dead women is possible in future. In past, Czech Republic, Turkey and the US failed in transplanting via a deceased donor 10 times. In 2016, doctors at the Cleveland Clinic transplanted a uterus from a deceased donor, but it failed after an infection developed.

Dr Dani Ejzenberg, the transplant team’s lead doctor at the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine said, “ Initially the woman was apprehensive about the transplant.”

Two more transplants are planned as part of the Brazilian study.

This will help thousands of women who are unable to have children due to uterine problems.

According to a report, nine babies were born in Sweden and two in US via living donor whereas India stands first in Asia.

The first transplant in India was conducted the country’s first womb transplant at GCLI, Pune.
