Conditional Bail to 17 convicts of post-Godhra Riots, Restricted to Enter Gujarat

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted conditional bail to 17 convicts in the cases related to the 2002 riots after Godhrakand in Gujarat. According to the information received, all the 17 convicts have been given bail by the court who all have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Supreme Court decision said that none of them can enter the border of Gujarat. The court said that they will remain in Indore and Jabalpur until the Supreme Court takes a final decision on their appeal. Other conditions set by the court include to do the social work.

The convicts are divided into different batches

The court has put the culprits in two separate batches. One batch has been sent to Indore and one batch to Jabalpur. The Supreme Court told all the convicts that while on bail they would do social work and religious work. The court has asked the legal officers in Indore and Jabalpur to ensure that the convicts do spiritual and social work during the bail.

The court has asked officers to work for their livelihood and also asked the State Legal Services Authority to file a compliance report. They have been also asked to report on their behaviour during bail. After Godhrakand, 33 people had lost their lives in these riots.
