Claustrophobia is an anxiety disorder that can happen to any human being. A study has shown that 10 percent of the world’s population suffers from severe claustrophobia. Only a few of these people get treatment for it. The word claustrophobia is derived from a Greek word, meaning a closed space. According to a report by IPSYCOM, director of The National Center for the Treatment of Phobias has stated that claustrophobia is one of the most common psychiatric conditions. A person suffering from this disease feels suffocated in closed places or small places. They feel that they are not able to breath and might die.

Humans suffering from claustrophobia are afraid of every tight spot. They get scared while taking bath, travelling in metro, tunnel, small space, lift, bathroom and many more. People suffering from this disease prefer to use stairs instead of elevators. Claustrophobia is actually the result of a painful experience in childhood, which continues to affect it for a long time. There are many reasons for this disease, such as falling into a hole in childhood, getting lost while going with the parents. Basically a traumatic experience from the past.
Treatment
Treatment for claustrophobia is primarily therapeutic. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is used to treat the disease.
