189 UN Workers Infected with Coronavirus, 3 Died

New Delhi : The United Nations is also not untouched by the increasing outbreak of Coronavirus infection. As of Sunday evening, UN workers infected with the COVID-19 infection totaled 189, including three deaths, across the entire UN system. A spokesman gave information about this. The news agency Xinhua quoted Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as saying, “From the onset of the pandemic to the UN system on Sunday evening, 189 cases of COVID-19 infection have been reported, of which three UN workers have died.”

On 13 March, the UN chief instructed all staff members to work from home from 16 March to 12 April to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at the UN headquarters in New York. Later on 1 April he extended his order for telecommuting (sitting anywhere from anywhere with the help of electronic devices) to 30 April.

According to an estimate by Johns Hopkins University of America, there are 19.2 lakh cases of coronavirus worldwide and 1,19,687 people have died. America has the highest number of 5,82,607 infected people in the world. About 23,000 people have died from COVID-19 there.

Deputy Secretary-General Farhan Haq said in a regular press conference on Monday, “As of Sunday evening, there have been confirmed infections in 189 UN personnel worldwide and this includes three deaths since the global pandemic began.”
