Yashwant Jadhav renominated for the Standing Committee Chairmanship by Shiv Sena

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena on Wednesday resolves to renominate current BMC Standing Committee chairman Yashwant Jadhav for the post. If Jadhav is reelected he will the third time Chairman of the cash-rich BMC’s Standing Committee. The elections for both the posts will be held on October 5 and the last date for filing nominations is Thursday.

Shiv Sena was suppose to nominate a new face as per the speculation but the party has decided to go ahead with Jadhav. For Education Committee’s head, Sena corporator Sandhya Doshi filed her nomination on Wednesday. The BJP has fielded candidates for both the posts for the first time. Colaba corporator Makarand Narvekar has filed his nomination for Standing Committee chairman while corporator Surekha Patil has filed her nomination for Education Committee. The Congress, the third largest party in the BMC will also contest for the positions. The corporator Asif Zakaria filed for Standing Committee and Sangeeta Handore for Education Committee.

This time the BMC major twist as Congress being an alliance partner with Shiv Sena, it is still contesting. This can make things difficult for Shiv Sena as there is a probability of BJP and Congress voting for each other’s candidate. Congress is third largest party in BMC after Shiv Sena and BJP.

The results of elections are declared based on the number of corporators each party has in the BMC and according the committee member are elected. The committee members elect the chairman-chairperson. In the standing committee, the Shiv Sena has 11 members, BJP 9, Congress 3, NCP and Samajwadi Party, one each. Congress or BJP vote will make it difficult for the Sena to retain the chairman’s post

The standing committee plays a crucial role in implementing the funds in the BMC. Every year, the municipal corporation spends around Rs 10,000 crore on various public works which are cleared by the standing committee.

Shiv Sena has nominated the current standing committee chairman. He has been elected as Standing Committee Chairman Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in 2018. In 2017 re-elected as corporator and appointed as leader of the House in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
