Wow! First Time in India, Now Metro will Run Under Water

NP NEWS 24 : Kolkata : Metro has become a necessity of the people in today’s time.We have seen the metro running above ground and underground, but very soon underwater metro will also run in the country. Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) is going to complete its East-West project soon. Metro has built the country’s first transport tunnel that will pass through the river. The entire project will be ready by March 2022.

 

This tunnel is built under the Hooghly River in Kolkata. Metro connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata will be started through this tunnel, which will save a lot of time. Thousands of people travel between these stations every day. The length of this tunnel will be 520 meters and the width will be approximately 30 meters. Special materials have been used to make it and special gasket has been used to avoid water leakage, which spreads when in contact with water.

Passengers of Howrah and Mahakaran metro station will pass under the river for 1 minute. The speed of the metro in the tunnel will be 80 km per hour. On this route, the metro will travel 10.6 kilometers through the tunnel, including a 520-meter tunnel built under the river. An alternate route has also been made for emergency service in this tunnel. Apart from the Hooghly River, a 7-km-long tunnel under the sea is to be built on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Rail Corridor. Overall, now people in India can also travel under water.

This tunnel comes under the second phase of Kolkata Metro Project. India’s first metro was started in Kolkata in 1984. It was the North-South Metro. The initial cost of the East-West Metro was Rs. 4900 crore and was 14 km long. Later, due to change and delay, the distance became 17 kilometers and the cost of the project reached Rs. 8600 crore. After the Hooghly Tunnel is formed, Kolkata will become the first state in the country where the metro will pass under the river and India will be one of the countries where the metro runs inside the river.
