WHO issues clarification after Baba Ramdev’s claim on Coronil

New Delhi: Amid claims made by Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved about clearance to Coronil by World Health Organisation (WHO), the global health body has issued a clarification that it has not reviewed or certified any traditional medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.

“WHO has not reviewed or certified the effectiveness of any traditional medicine for the treatment #COVID19,” the WHO said in a tweet on Friday. The WHO, however did not name Patanjali’s Coronil.

After the claims made by media about Coronil getting recognition from WHO and that it was a cure for COVID-19 spread on social media. Soon, Patanjali issued a clarification on Twitter saying that the certificate was issued by the Government of India and not WHO.

“We want to clarify to avoid confusion that our WHO GMP compliant COPP certificate to Coronil is issued by DCGI, Government of India. It is clear that WHO do not approve or disapprove any drugs. WHO works for building a better, healthier future for people all over the world,” Balkrishna tweeted after the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that it had “not reviewed or certified the effectiveness of any traditional medicine for the treatment of Covid-19.

On Friday, Baba Ramdev had launched the scientific research papers on Coronil in the presence of Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. No other information was provided about the research papers though.

The Union Ayush Ministry had earlier categorized ayurvedic Coronil tablets as an ‘Immuno-booster’.
