Uber driver held in sexually abuse and kidnapping of minor

PUNE: Vishal Chaudhari – Uber driver has been arrested by Pune police for kidnapping and a sexual abusing 17-year-old girl who left home after having a fight with her stepmother cost.

The incident had come to light, after the victim’s step-mother lodged complaint with Alandi police station against a person name Ramchandra, Ahmed Shaikh (33), from  Dighi and Vijay Hanuman Nanaware (30) from Bhosari. Duo has been arrested under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act and also under the Indian Penal Code, 1860 section Kidnapping, assaulting and rape.

Senior inspector Ravindra Chaudhari of Alandi police station who is investigating the case said, “The incident has taken place between September 11 to October 13. The victim on the trivial issue had a fight with her step-mother and left home on September 11. She lost her path and searching for someplace to sleep she came across a person name Ramchandra who personate as the social worker. The victim innocently narrated her sob story about how is been victimized by her stepmother. Victim father is mentally ill. Ramchandra took her to a lodge under the pretext of assuring her help and raped her forcefully in Vishrantwadi based Chandra lodge which we are still tracing.”

Chaudhary further said, “Getting such betrayal by Ramchandra who later left her on the isolated road after using her claiming he is getting some snack and fled away. Few hours later, Uber driver Abdul met her in nearby hawker snack centre who showed his official I-card and promise to take her police. But it was too dark and late he took her to his friend house Vijay whose wife had expired. Later Abdul left. Vijay sexually abuse and harras for two days. Then Abdul came who took her to his house. Who too sexually abuse her and restrained victim in his house. He made her work in his house.”

How the victim was traced?

It happens that Victim got familiar with Abdul neighborhood. She got friendly with a woman to name Komal More. She is the wife of Autorikshaw driver. She too had left home and her husband had lodged a missing complaint with Nigdi police station. Both victim and Komal had got to Shirdi where police traced her and with her Victim was found. Later, based on the description, the girl was handover to Alandi police station.”

Chaudhary said, “We had suspected that some undue incident the victim has undergone but she remains quiet. Later our lady officer along with social worker and with her step-mother spoke to her on October 13 and she then reveals the incident. Based on which we arrested. Still, the lodge name Chandra and accused Ramchandra is still to identify.”

Uber issued a release to media mentioning, “This incident is deeply upsetting. However, we understand that this is an off-platform incident. We stand ready to support the law enforcement authorities in their investigation. While we ensure all driver partners undergo stringent background checks and police verification when joining the platform, the access to the app stands canceled with immediate effect in case of any police complaint against any individual.”
