Social welfare dept Dy commissioner caught taking Rs 50,000 bribe

In one of biggest catch, the sleuths from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (Pune unit) on Friday arrested the deputy commissioner of the social welfare department, Pune division, while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.

Officials said that the accused deputy commissioner Punaji Sakharam Kawate (56), a resident of Warje, had allegedly demanded the bribe from the trustee of an Ashram Shala to give the favorable report after inspection of the school.

After verifying the bribe demand, a team led by Police Inspector Surekha Gharge laid a trap and caught him red handed.

The job of the social welfare department is the promotion of educational and economic interests of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other weaker sections.
