Pune Water Supply | Pune Municipal Corporation Maintains Weekly Water Cut Despite Rains

Pune : Pune Water Supply | As the monsoon showers have finally graced the catchment areas of all four dams in the Khadakwasla Dam Chain Project, residents of Pune were hopeful for an end to their water woes. However, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to maintain its cautious approach towards water reduction measures. The decision to stop water supply every Thursday will be upheld for the time being, even though rains have brought some relief to the city’s parched reservoirs.

The situation leading up to this cautious stance can be traced back to May 18 when the PMC decided to implement a weekly water cut, shutting off water supply every Thursday. This decision came in response to the decreasing water reserves in the Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar, and Khadakwasla dams, which together form the vital Khadakwasla Dam Project that supplies water to Pune.

At the time, the Indian Meteorological Department had predicted that the monsoon rains would arrive in June, bringing much-needed relief to the region. However, the month of June passed without satisfactory rainfall, prompting the PMC to initiate daytime water shutdowns to conserve water supply until the end of August. As a precautionary measure, they also contemplated increasing water reduction measures further.

Yet, in light of the recent rainfall in the city and surrounding catchment areas, there has been a slight improvement in the water storage levels. Over the last two days, the reservoirs have witnessed an increase of two billion cubic feet (TMC) of water. Meteorological forecasts have further predicted heavy rains in the coming days, which holds the potential for a significant rise in water storage.

Despite this positive development, the PMC has chosen to continue its weekly water cut every Thursday. The decision to maintain this measure indicates the corporation’s conservative approach towards water management. PMC authorities are closely monitoring the situation and evaluating the overall water storage levels in the dams. The final decision to cancel the water cut will only be made when there is a substantial and sustained increase in water storage.

Pune’s water management has become a crucial issue, given the ever-increasing demand for water from its rapidly growing population. The PMC’s cautious stance is understandable, as they seek to ensure a steady and sustainable water supply for residents. Implementing water reduction measures helps balance the usage and storage of water resources, safeguarding against potential water scarcity during dry spells.
