Pune: Social Media Outcry Leads to Suspension of Traffic Cop Caught in Bribery Scandal (Video)

Pune: Two days ago, a video of a traffic policeman taking a backhander on duty at Mahaveer Chowk in the city went tremendously viral on social media. Taking serious note of this viral video, the concerned police constable, Vijay Mewalal Kanojia, working at the Lashkar Traffic Department, has been suspended by the city police. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohidas Pawar has taken this action against Kanojia for dereliction of duty.

Police constable Vijay Kanojia was on duty at Mahaveer Chowk on Saturday, March 30. At around 1.30 p.m., Kanojia saw a young man driving a two-wheeler that bore the fancy number plate. As it is illegal to have fancy number plates on a bike, Kanojia stopped the bike. However, he immediately left the young man with the bike after receiving a payoff from him, in spite of taking legal action against the accused.

Notably, someone had captured this entire incident on their mobile phone and made that video viral on social media by giving ‘March and MG Road’ as a caption to it. After this video buzzed on social media for two days, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohidas Pawar suspended the concerned traffic policeman on charges of dereliction of duty and tarnishing the image of the police force.

The Deputy Commissioner issued the suspension order on Monday, April 1. As per the rule, during the period of suspension, Vijay Kanojia will not be able to engage in any private employment or business. It has also been mentioned in the order that the amount of subsistence allowance has to be accepted by him by giving a certificate in this regard.

Similarly, if he wants to leave the headquarters during the suspension period, he would have to get the permission of the Deputy Commissioner of Police Headquarters, and he would have to attend the Reserve Police Inspector, Police Headquarters Pune City, every day during his suspension period.
