Pune police to first make helmet compulsory for its staffs, other government employees

PUNE: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE-  In order to pre-empt opposition to Pune police’s planned drive for compulsory helmet from January 1, the helmet drive will be started first from government employees especially police personnel and regional transport office (RTO) staffs from Tuesday.

Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Shivaji Bodkhe on Monday said that it is part of awareness drive before police starts taking action against all those who don’t wear helmet while driving, riding two-wheelers.

“From Tuesday, we are starting the drive against police personnel and RTO staffs. Later we will approach private companies also to reach out to their employees. We have given ample time to people to purchase helmet and use them while driving, riding two-wheelers”, the officer said.

As per the latest statistics, a total of 125 two-wheeler riders died in accident this year in the city and out of that 123 were not wearing helmet.

Few days back, Pune Police commissioner K Venkatesham announced that police will strictly implement the helmet rule in the city from January 1.
