Pune News | Restoring Beauty: Mastani Lake Set to Flourish as a Biodiversity Haven

Pune : Pune News | The historic Mastani Lake in Patas, Taluka Daund, is set to undergo a transformation that will enhance its natural beauty and create a thriving habitat for birds. Dr. Sunita Singh, the Principal Chief Forest Conservator (Social Forestry), has taken significant measures to beautify the lake and ensure its rich biodiversity.

To achieve this, various varieties of fruits, flowers, and trees have been carefully planted around the lake area, creating a welcoming environment for birds and restoring the ecological balance. With its vast water storage capacity, the lake serves as a crucial component of the regional forest, making it an ideal location for biodiversity activities. Dr. Singh has devised a comprehensive plan to implement these activities across a significant hectare area on behalf of social forestry.

The primary objective of this beautification project is twofold. Firstly, the plantation of 6,000 trees of different species aims to provide a suitable habitat for a diverse range of birds in the lake vicinity. As the trees flourish, they will attract various avian species, turning the area into a paradise for bird lovers. Additionally, the introduction of more trees is expected to have a positive impact on rainfall patterns, benefiting the entire area.

In 2019, the regional forest department assumed responsibility for the Mastani Lake and its surrounding area. However, the lake was plagued by an overgrowth of thistles, and dirt was scattered in certain areas, detracting from its natural splendor. Recognizing the need for restoration, the social forestry department has now taken a significant step forward by initiating tree plantations and creating a conducive habitat for birds in the lake area.

The efforts being undertaken by Dr. Singh and her team hold great promise for the future of Mastani Lake. If successful, this initiative will not only rejuvenate the lake but also establish it as a unique attraction in the region. Bird enthusiasts are particularly excited about the prospect, as they anticipate an increase in bird diversity and a greater influx of visitors to the area.

With an area spanning 24.82 hectares, Mastani Lake has a water storage capacity of approximately 14 hectares. The ongoing plantation activities mark Phase I of the project, with a focus on cultivating Banyan saplings. The ultimate goal is to plant a total of 6,000 saplings, ensuring the long-term sustainability and natural splendor of the lake.

As the beautification efforts progress and the trees grow to maturity, Mastani Lake is poised to become an inviting haven for birds, a place where nature enthusiasts can revel in the wonders of avian diversity.
