Pune News | Pune Student’s Project Selected for NASA’s ‘Cubes in Space’ Program

Pune : Pune News | A remarkable achievement by a young student from Pune has brought pride to the city and the country as his project gets selected for the prestigious ‘Cubes in Space’ program organized by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Rohan Bhansali, a 6th standard student at Vidya Valley School, has been chosen for his project on studying barriers to shielding humans, objects, and payloads from high-intensity solar UV radiation in spaceflight.

Rohan, along with his mother, Dr. Kavita Bhansali, shared details about the project during a press conference. The ‘Cubes in Space’ program by NASA aims to encourage students between the ages of 11 and 18 from around the world to design and build miniature satellites. Rohan’s project focuses on developing a solution to protect humans, objects, and payloads from the harmful effects of high-intensity solar UV radiation in space. His project consists of a 4 by 4 cm cube with four UV sensors, three selectable materials (silk, aluminum, plastic), and a microprocessor to log data during its journey into the stratosphere. The stratosphere is located at an altitude of 1,64,000 feet, significantly higher than where airplanes typically fly.

Expressing his joy and passion for science, Rohan explained that he decided to participate in this project due to his keen interest in the field. With the support and encouragement from his school and parents, he devoted several months to studying and preparing the device for the project.

Being selected for the ‘Cubes in Space’ program is a testament to Rohan’s dedication and scientific aptitude. It highlights the immense talent and potential of young students in Pune and serves as an inspiration for other aspiring scientists and innovators. This recognition from NASA not only puts Pune on the global map but also showcases the capabilities of Indian students in the field of space science.
