Pune PMC News | Pune Municipal Corporation Urges Citizens to Avoid POP Ganesha Idols

Pune : Pune PMC News | The Municipal Corporation of Pune has issued an appeal to citizens, urging them not to purchase Ganesha idols made from Plaster of Paris (POP) as they are banned. Instead, the municipality recommends opting for eco-friendly Ganesha idols made of Shadu or clay.

Despite the ban, many citizens still immerse Ganesha idols in running water or ponds, which poses a threat to the environment. In response to this issue, the Central Pollution Control Board released guidelines in May 2020 for idol artisans and manufacturers. The municipality emphasizes the importance of supporting Ganesha idol makers who strictly adhere to these guidelines and celebrate Ganeshotsav in an environmentally friendly manner, stated Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Dr. Kunal Khemnar.

According to the circular issued by the municipal corporation, Ganesha idols should be crafted using natural, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly materials such as shadu soil and clay. The use of any toxic inorganic raw materials, POP, or polystyrene should be avoided. Additionally, ornaments for the idols should be made from dried flower material, straws, and natural products from trees and resins for added shine.

When it comes to painting the idols, water-based colors that are biodegradable and non-toxic should be used. Toxic and non-degradable chemical colors, oil paints, and enamel are strictly prohibited. Decorative garments should also be created using natural materials and colors, ensuring they are removable and washable. The municipality emphasizes the use of naturally produced colors derived from plants, minerals, or colored rocks for painting.

Despite previous efforts, the implementation of a ‘POP’-free Ganeshotsav could not be fully realized in the city last year. Recently, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation issued an order prohibiting the use of ‘POP’ idols. However, the Pune Municipal Corporation had not yet issued a similar order, leading to confusion regarding the municipality’s role. Finally, the municipality has released an appeal to raise awareness about the ban on POP idols and encourage citizens to choose eco-friendly alternatives.
