Pune News | PMC Procures Safe and Transportable Boats for Flood Rescue Operations

Pune : Pune News | The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a crucial step to enhance its flood rescue capabilities by purchasing inflatable rubber boats. These boats, which are easy to transport and safe to use in water, will aid in rescue operations during floods. The PMC has initiated the tender process through its warehouse department to acquire eight of these boats. The chosen boats will be of the same type as those used by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

With the onset of the monsoon season, the release of water from the Khadakwasla Dam, and the potential flooding of the Pavana River and Mula River, there is a risk of flooding in Pune. To mitigate this risk, the PMC estimates the flood levels and relocates citizens to safer areas. However, in emergency situations, individuals may still find themselves trapped in floodwaters, necessitating immediate rescue efforts. To ensure effective response, the PMC’s Disaster Management Department requires high-quality boats capable of safely rescuing citizens in distress.

Last year, the PMC initiated the purchase of ‘FRP’ type boats, but concerns arose regarding their quality. After conducting an inquiry with the NDRF, it was determined that the inflatable rubber boats would be a better alternative. These boats are resistant to punctures, providing enhanced safety in water. Consequently, the previous tender for the FRP boats was cancelled.

The warehouse department has now taken charge of procuring the inflatable rubber boats as per the requirements of the disaster management department. Chetna Kerure, head of the warehouse department, stated that out of the eight boats being purchased, two will be allocated to the fire brigade, while the remaining six will be distributed among regional offices. These boats will be utilized for rescue operations in lakes and other water bodies within the city.
