Pune News | Nagar Road’s Traffic Woes Await a Solution; The Long-Pending Kharadi-Shivne Riverbed Road Project

Pune: Pune News | Over the past decade, the Nagar Road area has witnessed an exponential rise in population and vehicles, leading to severe traffic congestion on the city’s roads. As the number of vehicles continues to increase, the lack of an alternative road has exacerbated the traffic problem day by day. The much-anticipated Kharadi Shivne riverbed road, first proposed 12 years ago, remains only on paper. However, its completion promises to be a game-changer, effectively addressing the traffic woes between Kharadi and Yerwada on Nagar Road.

To bolster the city’s transportation infrastructure, the 1987 development plan proposed a 22.50 km road along the river from Shivne to Kharadi. This riverbed road is considered a critical component to alleviate traffic congestion. In 2011, the Municipal Corporation floated a tender of Rs 356 crore for the road’s construction, which will be carried out in three phases: Shivne to Mhatre Pool (6 km), Mhatre Pool to Sangamwadi (5 km), and Sangamwadi to Kharadi (11.50 km). Once completed, the road will span a width of 100 feet, featuring well-planned sidewalks, cycle tracks, and subways on both sides.

Originally slated for completion within three years, the road’s progress has been severely hindered due to delayed land acquisition. Despite nearly twelve years of efforts, only 6 km of the 11.5 km stretch from Kharadi to Sangamwadi in the third phase has seen successful land acquisition, and only 5 km of road work has been completed. The remaining section remains stalled as the acquisition process is yet to be finalized.

The snag in the land acquisition process is concentrated on a 1.2 km stretch from Kharadi to Sangamwadi, which has caused the project’s budget to exceed Rs 140 crore out of the allocated Rs 356 crore.

The absence of an alternative route has heavily impacted commuters from Nagar, Shirur, Ranjangaon, Shikrapur, Sanswadi, Koregaon Bhima, Lonikand, Wagholi, Kharadi, Vadgaonsheri, Chandannagar, and Vimannagar, who rely on Nagar Road for their daily travel needs. With no other viable options, the surge in vehicle numbers has inevitably led to massive traffic jams during peak hours.

The much-awaited riverbed road promises to provide the much-needed relief from traffic congestion and address the pressing demands of a rapidly growing city. However, the project’s prolonged delays and stalled land acquisition have left citizens yearning for its completion.
