Pune Metro gets a thumbs up from NGT to ride through the Mutha river bed

On Friday, The Delhi Bench The National Green Tribunal (NGT) finally approved Maharashtra Metro’s idea of constructing a metro route through the river bed.

Due to the question of polluting the river the road of 1.4 Km from Vanaz to Ramwadi through the Mutha River was on hold. The verdict was passed after the Environment Expert Committee (EEC) submitted a report explaining that the construction will not affect the biodiversity and flow of the river.

“The construction should follow a proper procedure as advised by the committee,” ordered NGT. The issue was raised when a petition was filed by Environmentalist Yash Yadwadkar and his companions. The petition which was filed in May 2016 claimed that it will affect the water flow, biodiversity, and purity of the river. After that, there were a lot of hearings on the issue.

To take the overview of the issue, a committee was formed. The committee included hydrologist, environmental experts, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board (MSBB), Senior state scientist of Maharashtra State Pollution Control Corporation (MSPCC). NEERI was associated for the corporation within the Committee.

The verdict was passed in the favor of Maharashtra Metro under the leadership of Justice Adarsh Goyal, Justice Javed Rahim, Justice S. P. Wangdi and the expert member Naveen Nanda.

Adv. Mishra who informed of the green signal in a Press Conference, also told that the petition’s work was done by The chief legal advisor to the corporation, Ravindra Thorat, Adv. Prahlad Paranjape, Adv Kaustubh Devgade, Municipal Commissioner Law Officer Nisha Chavan.

The EEC’s report said that a committee consisting of Environmental Experts, officers under the chairmanship of departmental commissioners should be founded. This committee would make sure that the construction of metro is done according to the advice and rules provided by EEC. The committee is ordered by NGT that it should inspect the work progress in every two months and the inspection report should be submitted to NGT.
