Pune Cyber Crime | CEO scam is becoming a headache: Money is sought from relatives after stealing sensitive information

PUNE: Pune Cyber Crime | If you are CEO or a senior official of a company, there is no guarantee that you are safe in the digital world. Because cyber criminals are stealing your hard earned money.
Email and Facebook accounts of senior officials are hacked and sensitive information is stolen. Incidents of seeking money from relatives and friends have increased. Hence, CEO Scam is turning out to be a headache for senior officials and businessmen.
The email or Facebook accounts of a company’s CEO or senior official are hacked and a a message is sent on WhatsApp to friends and relatives. They are told to share company’s sensitive data or money is sought for some important work. They are told to reply immediately after receiving the message. An impression is created that the message is genuine. Money is also sought by sending a message that there is an emergency. Some criminals are taking the help of AI to create the voice of the CEO. It becomes difficult to identify a genuine or a fake message.

When you receive an email, message or a call asking for money, sensitive information or an unexpected demand, you should confirm about the genuineness of the message.
Emotional messages are sent by fraudsters asking for money. Instead of acting in a hurry, confirm the message.
Keep abreast of new cyber crime techniques
If two factor authentication is used, even if scamsters obtain the password, it becomes difficult to hack
Personal, financial or family photos should not be shared via email or WhatsApp
Use Facebook profile lock
If you think you are being targeted, lodge a complaint at the cyber police station
If we are alert in the digital age, we can be safe

Meenal Supe-Patil, Sr PI, cyber police, Thane said, “If Facebook account is hacked, the profile should be locked immediately. If messages are received on Facebook and WhatsApp seeking money, ignore them. A person should communicate with that person and confirm the message. If the Facebook and email is hacked, a complaint should be lodged with the cyber police. The cyber police send the complaints to Facebook. Facebook carries out verification and closes the accounts.”
