Pune airport to have multi-level parking soon

STRAP: MP Anil Shirole once quoted, “Till the new airport could become a reality by 2022-23; till then the existing airport will have to be expanded.”

PUNE: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE- In July, Pune airport started constructing smoking zone, whereas in by September, it was announced that 1,000 crores were invested over the next two years, for expanding the terminal, cargo handling facilities, roads and parking space to augment capacity.

Now the Pune Airport Authority is going to construct a multi-level parking facility, as the tender has been awarded to a city-based contractor. The construction will start soon and it will cost Rs 120 crore.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) had approved the structural plan of the seven-storey parking in front of the airport in January this year. The facility is estimated to have a capacity to park 1,000 vehicles.

Director of Pune airport, Ajay Kumar said, “The contract for this project has been awarded to Abhinav Rainbow Developers and Promoters, a city-based developer, recently. The company will be responsible for construction, operation and maintenance of the facility. The expenditure of this project is estimated to be Rs 120 crore. The facility will also have commercial outlets.”

The new multi-level parking facility will be constructed in parking number one. The parking lot will serve several purposes. Once the building is constructed, it will take far less space as compared to now and the number of vehicles that can be parked will also increase.

“Our plan is to free the premises from the vehicle movement. At present, the movement of vehicles has increased. We want to enable the premises to be a free walkway for passengers. But we have to wait till the construction of the new terminal building and multi-level parking is ready for operation,” said Kumar.
