Pune Airport | Cargo Terminal Delayed at Pune Airport: Traders and Entrepreneurs Forced to Rely on Mumbai

Pune Airport | Pune, known as the hub of western Maharashtra, has been eagerly awaiting the start of cargo services at the Pune Airport. However, despite the cargo terminal being set up two months ago on a significant plot of land, the necessary approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is still pending. Traders and entrepreneurs in Pune are now left with no choice but to ship their goods domestically and internationally from Mumbai.

Last year, the Ministry of Defense approved the lease of two acres of land to the Pune Airport Authority for the expansion of cargo services. The original rent was set at a staggering Rs 1 crore 30 lakh per year. However, through the efforts of the late MP Girish Bapat, the land was acquired for just one rupee for a period of five years. The cargo terminal, spanning two and a half acres, has been constructed, but the crucial BCAS permission is yet to be granted.

Airport Director Santosh Dhoke stated, “The construction of the cargo terminal at the new site has been completed. Permission has been sought from BCAS to start cargo services. Although a team from BCAS inspected the airport and cargo terminal, no clearance has been received thus far.”

The suspension of cargo services at Pune Airport has become a matter of concern for small and large entrepreneurs who now have to rely on Mumbai for shipping their goods. Air transport expert Darhysheel Vandekar emphasized the responsibility of the airport administration to provide cargo services, considering Pune’s significance as a major economic center.

BCAS recently conducted its second inspection at the Pune airport, including the cargo terminal. Instructions were provided during the first inspection in February, and it is anticipated that further directives were given during the recent visit. However, the delay in obtaining BCAS approval is likely to extend for a few more days.

On a positive note, the completion of the cargo terminal has allowed terminals one and two at the airport to be connected, benefiting passengers. This development will not only alleviate congestion but also streamline operations by dispersing passenger traffic across the two terminals. The airport authorities have already initiated the work required to connect the two terminals, aiming to improve the overall passenger experience.

While the wait for BCAS approval continues, the Pune community eagerly anticipates the commencement of cargo services at their local airport, which will undoubtedly contribute to the region’s economic growth and development.
