Policeman Posted At Kolkata’s Historic Writers’ Building Commits Suicide By Shooting Himself

Kolkata : On Friday, a Kolkata police constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at the historic Writers’ Building in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Officials said Constable Bishwajit Karak (34) belonged to the fifth battalion of Kolkata Police. He was stationed alone at Gate number 6 of the British building and he shot himself at 3.25 pm in the afternoon. The Writers’ Building used to have a state secretariat earlier.

Bishwajit was posted at gate number 6 of the building
In 2013, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee removed the secretariat from the Writers’ Building to the 14th floor of Nabanna on the other bank of the Hugli River. Gate number 6 where he was stationed was currently used by some senior ministers to enter the VVIP building. Officials said his shift began at two and a half in the afternoon and he was sitting in a chair at the end of the door in front of Press Corner. During this time, he shot himself.

Police said, we are investigating the case
Deputy Commissioner (middle) Sudhir Kumar Neelakantam said after visiting the spot, “He used a service rifle to shoot himself.” We are investigating the case. Looking at the manner in which the bullet was fired and its direction, we can assume that Bishwajit committed suicide.” Sources said that he was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead. He said that Bishwajit had joined the force about 10 years ago and was from the former Medinipur district.

Bishwajit was undergoing treatment for depression
He told that Bishwajit lived in a rented house in the Lake Town area of the metropolis. His wife is a nurse at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Sources said that he had been undergoing treatment for depression for some time. The Writers’ Building is currently undergoing reconstruction and has some government departments, while the rest have been transferred to other locations.
