Nirbhaya Case : Tihar All Set to Hang Convicts Tomorrow, Court will Give Verdict in a While

NP NEWS 24 : New Delhi : The Patiala House Court will give a verdict in a while on the plea of the three convicts in the Nirbhaya case requesting a stay on their execution on 1 February. Earlier, during the hearing, Tihar Jail officials said in the court that we are ready to hang the three convicts tomorrow. Jail officials, presenting the report before Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana, said that at present the mercy plea of convict Vinay Sharma is pending, the other three culprits can be hanged. He said that there is nothing illegal in this. At the same time, lawyer Vrinda Grover protested on Tihar’s case in court.

The court told advocate AP Singh, appearing on behalf of the convicts, that we have less time because the culprits are to be hanged tomorrow. The court said that we will deliver our verdict today. Meanwhile, convict Mukesh’s lawyer Vrinda Grover was also present in the court. To which the lawyer appearing on behalf of Nirbhaya’s parents objected. The prosecution counsel said that when all the pleas of Mukesh have been dismissed, why did his lawyer come to this hearing today. The judge expressed displeasure over the arguments between the lawyers of the two sides.

AP Singh, counsel for convicts Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma and Akshay Kumar, requested the court to impose an ‘indefinite’ postponement of the hanging. He said that the use of legal remedies by some of the convicts are not complete yet. On this, the government lawyer said that this series will go on endlessly. The guilty will continue to file petition in the High Court or the Supreme Court. On January 17, the Patiala House Court issued a black warrant for the second time to sentence the four convicts of the case, Mukesh (32), Pawan (25), Vinay (26) and Akshay (31) to death. They were ordered to be hanged in Tihar Jail at 6 am. So far the convict Mukesh has used all the legal options. It also includes filing a mercy petition before President Ramnath Kovind. His mercy petition was turned down by the President on 17 January. Mukesh then challenged the rejection of the mercy petition in the Supreme Court which was dismissed on Wednesday.

It is worth mentioning that, on the night of 16-17 December 2012, six people gangraped a 23-year-old Para Medical student in a moving bus and threw her on the road. She was taken to Singapore for treatment where the victim succumbed to injuries on December 29. It has been 7 years for this case but Nirbhaya has not got justice yet.
