Nagpur : One third city power bills unpaid

Nagpur : Nearly one-third of the city’s electricity consumers have not paid their electricity bills for several days. According to MSEDCL, 3 lakh 46 thousand 119 electricity customers have not paid electricity bill of Rs 309.84 crore. The city has a total of nine lakh customers. Now, as per the instructions of the headquarters, the recovery campaign is being started from Tuesday. Currently no customer’s power connection will be disconnected. Electricity staff will contact the outstanding customer directly and request them to pay the electricity bill.

The billing process was stalled as the electricity meter readings were off during the lockdown, then three to four months of bills were sent at once. Many complaints of citizens about the electricity bill increased. In such a situation, a large number of people stopped paying their bills.

Considering the city of Nagpur, 2 lakh 93 thousand 831 consumers have not paid their bills of Rs 231.76 crore, while electricity bills of Rs 6,000 crore are outstanding across the state. In such a situation, MSEDCL has decided to start a statewide bill recovery drive from Tuesday.

Under this, customers will be contacted directly and requested to pay the bill. Currently the connection will not be disconnected. But if the outstanding amount is not reduced, the connection will be cut off. For this, a team has been deployed from the branch office to the circuit office.

The city is supplied with electricity through four divisions Mahal, Gandhibagh, Civil Lines and Congress Nagar. Apart from Congress Nagar, all the three divisions were under franchise till a year ago. Of these four, the Mahal division is at the forefront of arrears. 1 lakh 8 thousand 551 customers here have not paid the electricity bill of Rs 93.35 crore, while Congress Nagar has the lowest amount pending. There is a bill of Rs 58.36 crore on 77,866 customers.
