#MovieReview: Gully boy ka “Time Aagaya”

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE:   TANUSHREE PODDAR:          Ever since the release of its trailer and the songs, the buzz surrounding Gully Boy has been phenomenal. Now, its early reviews suggest that Gully Boy is totally worth every bit of hype, love and attention and are winning hearts.

Yet another Zoya Aktar’s directory with Reema Kagti and Vijay Maurya’s writing with powerful performances by versatile actors, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, Gully boy has hit the silver-screen and we cannot keep calm.

Gully boy, a story of an underdog rapper Murrad, Ranveer Singh, from Dharavi whose dreams is bigger than his reality. The film is about his coming of age, his understanding and his discovery of who he truly is and where he stands. The movie is all about expression, here, it is rap.

The main star of the film is its potent music and songs. Artists like Spitfire, Divine, Naezy, Sez on the Beat, Midival Punditz, Karsh Kale, Raghu Dixit, Dub Sharma, Chandrashekhar Kunder, Jasleen Royal, Arjun Chandy, Ankur Tewari, Karsh Kale, Kaam Bhaari, Mickey McCleary, IshQ Bector, Prem, Hardeep and Viveick Rajagopalan have shared their art pieces.

Huge chunks of Ranveer’s performance in Gully boy are internal, it plays out through his expression. The film brings the Mumbaikar out of him with subtleness.

But what keeps you going is the authentic filmmaking and storytelling. This is the world that the writers have clearly entrenched themselves. Zoya has co-opted the story of two Mumbai based MC’s, Naezy and Divine. The movie is not an outsiders view of these people and their lives. It is a keenly observed portrait beautifully made by Zoya Akthar. The lingo, the dialogues, the punchlines is raw and relatable giving an edge to the story.

The love story between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in this movie is all about pure understanding of being together for many years which is endearing. Alia bring an effortless charisma on the screen by playing the role of a spunky medical student who belongs from a conservative family who loves Ranveer Singh and has marked her territory or else ‘Mar jayega tu‘.

Another actor who shined in the film is newbie Siddharth Chaturvedi, who plays MC Sher, a rapper who takes Murrad under his wings have clearly marked presence.

Even though, Gully Boy suffers from a slow pace, the film takes its own sweet time to establish the story in 2hours 30minutes running time.
