#MeToo – Criminal lynched to death after he throws stone at victim’s house for complaining about molestation

A 28-year-old criminal on police record was beaten to death in Wanvadi on Saturday night. The deceased had thrown stones on a woman’s house for lodging complaint against him for molesting her after argument. He had also damaged vehicles near her house.

The deceased has been identified as Akshay Sonawane (age 28, resident of Daradevasti in Wanvadi.

According to police, Sonawane is a historysheeter with several cases of theft, assault registered against him in the past. Around 3.30 pm on Saturday, he had gone to Rajiv Gandhi colony in Mohammadwadi. He was drunk and had argument with a woman and he allegedly molested her. After this the woman gave the complaint to the police. When learnt about the complaint, he again went to the colony around 10 pm. He allegedly pelted stones at the woman’s house. There parked vehicles were also damaged by him. Some people tried to stop him but started abusing them and continued to damage the vehicles. Then 3-4 men started assaulting him badly. He sustained grievous injuries in the incident.

After getting information about this incident, Wanwadi police station officials rushed to the spot. He was immediately taken to Sassoon Hospital, but he had died before the doctor could examine him.

Police said that Sonwane had 11 cases against when he was less than 18 years old (juvenile). Now there were seven cases against him. A few days ago, Wanwadi police arrested him and two cases of bike thefts were solved. He had come out on bail recently. His mother passed away in his childhood and his father had married again. Sonawane had addiction for whitener and liquor.

On Saturday afternoon, when he was on a motorbike, he had a dispute with a woman and allegedly molested her. The woman gave the complaint to the police. He had fled to the nearby forest. Drunken, he returned at night and started pelting stones at the woman’s house. When he didn’t pay heed to people’s call for stop, a crowd beat him up with sticks. He sustained injuries including on head.
