‘Light House’ project to bring lights in lives of Pune’s youth

India is known as the country of young people. Various schemes are going on to utilize the power of these youths in the development of the country. Maharashtra is a state of progressive thinking where innovative programs are being implemented to make positive use of this youth power.

Pune is known as the educational capital of the state. The youth’s number in Pune city is growing rapidly. Though today’s young generation has different ways to fulfill their dream, they have confusion in choosing the proper way. Those who have a better economic background can stand on their own feet. However, the project of “Light House-Skill Development and Employment Center” is a boon for those young people whose economic, social conditions are not good. This project is running by Pune City Corporation in collaboration with Pune City Connect, under the smart city project.

In June 2016 the project started with the aim of helping all the young people in Pune to bring their own career dreams into reality and to make them financially capable. There are 3 Light House centers working in Aundh, Yerwada and Hadapsar. This project is a unique opportunity for every student to find a career path, as well as the opportunity for the students and their families to know the various municipal schemes. Any student can do his/her favorite ‘Skill development program’ free of charge.

Amrita Bahulekar the member of the project said, “Student journey begins with 80 hours (approximately 20 days) foundation course, before the completion of any skill development program for the first time in the lighthouse. It gives you the opportunity to find the strengths, intelligence, and skills in yourself. Students have an opportunity to participate in various sports, to improve their conversation skills, to express their opinions, to work with everyone in the group, and to improve their leadership skills. Foundation Course also taught those capabilities to students which are required to succeed at the workplace.”

Ruchi Mathur is the member of City Connect said, “Lighthouse is a safe place, where anyone can work in a free and fair environment. The person who came here, without any discrimination, he/she is accepted as ‘man’ with his/her good and bad qualities. We believe that everyone has the potential to succeed if he/she gets the right opportunity.”

More than 4,000 youths have participated in the 4 centers in Pune Municipal Corporation. Out of this, more than 2, 400 youths have started studying skill development program, by choosing their favorite skill development program. The remaining students are at various stages of the Foundation Course. 816 are working in Tech Mahindra, Metro Global, Infosys, and some are running their own business successfully. Vandana Pagar received training in the lighthouse. At present, she has started her own business of making spices and sending these spices abroad too. Altaf Sayyad, who works at Infosys, said, “I improved my conversation skills by coming to the lighthouse.”

Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao said that for transforming the economic, social status of the young generation, we are trying to set up the lighthouse in every administrative ward of Pune. Continues efforts are going to transform young people who are in the Light House.

Currently, the Light House is working at 4 places in Pune. Courses are taught free in the lighthouse.
