Landslides Due to Incessant Rains in Kerala Kills 5 Tea Garden Laborers

Munnar : Due to continuous rains in Munnar, Kerala, a major landslide has occurred in Munnar. So far 5 people have died in this accident. Many laborers working in tea gardens are trapped. According to local officials, the accident is from Idukki district. Due to heavy rains, contact has been lost from these areas. According to the information so far, 10 people have been saved. It is being said that about 80 people live here.

Help sought from Indian Air Force
According to news agency PTI, the team of NDRF has reached the spot for relief and rescue. About 20 houses have been damaged. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that he has approached the Indian Air Force to provide helicopter services in Rajmala for rescue operations.

Trouble in providing relief due to bad weather
Kerala Revenue Minister E Chandrasekaran has said that there were about 82 people living in 3 labor camps. He said that at the moment nothing can be said about whether the workers were there at the time of landslide or not. According to Chandrasekaran, due to inclement weather, there is a lot of difficulty in reaching the scene.

It is continuously raining
Northern Kerala received heavy rainfall on Thursday. In view of heavy rains, a ‘Red Alert’ has been issued for Wayanad and Idukki districts. At the same time, the city of Nilambur has been flooded due to the rise in water of Cheliar river.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its bulletin that a ‘red alert’ has been issued for Malappuram district in view of rain on August 7. Orange alert has been issued till August 9 in nine districts including Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The Malappuram district administration has opened nine camps in the district while seven camps have been opened in Nilambur alone.
