Govt’s new labor laws will allow 3 days leave in a week

According to the new labor law, employees are likely to get 3 days off a week in the coming period. The Ministry of Labor and Employment will finalize the rules related to the implementation of four new labor laws this week. Once these laws come into force, a new system in labor policies will be introduced in the country.

Union labour secretary Apurva Chandra said on Monday this provision will comprise a work limit of 48 hours per week, adding that organisations would have three choices – deploying employees for four days at 12 hours per day, five days at around 10 hours per day and six days at eight hours per day.

The move has been triggered after there were apprehensions raised over the government’s proposal to increase the spreadover hours to 12 under the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions, 2020 from 10.5 now.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Chandra said the draft rules under the labour codes are being finalised. He added that most States were in the process of framing their rules and some, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, would be ready with their drafts this week.

Meanwhile, work is also being done towards rolling out an online portal by June this year for the registration of workers in the unorganised sector, including gig and platform workers and migrant workers.

Labor workers will be registered through this channel. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had mentioned about such a web portal in her budget speech.
