Government releases new guidelines on red meat, ‘Halal’ word removed from document

New Delhi : The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority of the Central Government, APEDA, has decided to remove the word Halal from the Red Meat Manual. APEDA issued new guidelines on Monday night. For the past few days, some groups of Hindu right wing were running a campaign on social media about ‘Halal’.

APEDA has made changes in the standards of food safety management system and quality management documents. Earlier, it was written that animals are killed while following the halal process. Under this, special care is taken of the needs of Islamic countries. At the same time, now in this document where meat has to be imported, animals have been killed according to that country.

According to Hinduism and Sikhism, eating ‘halal’ meat is forbidden
This manual states, ‘According to Hinduism and Sikhism, eating ‘halal’ meat is prohibited. It is against religion. Therefore, the committee passes a resolution directing restaurants and meat shops to write about the meat they sell and serve as ‘halal’ or ‘jhatka’ meat.’

The Standing Committee of the BJP-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation has also approved the proposal, asking restaurants or shops to make a mandatory display of whether the meat being sold or served by them is ‘halal’ or it has been cut using the ‘jhatka’ method. However, this resolution is yet to be passed in the House of SDMC, on which BJP has control.

At the same time, Chairman of the Standing Committee, Rajdutt Gehlot said that after the proposal is approved by the House, restaurants and meat shops have to clearly mention whether the meat they are selling is prepared using the ‘halal or ‘jhatka’ method.
