Global Surge in Domestic Violence During Lockdown, UN Chief Appeals Governments to Protect Women

New Delhi : Coronavirus cases continue to increase worldwide, although fewer infections have occurred on Sunday than in the past two days. As of Monday morning, the number of infected patients has exceeded 1.2 million 72 thousand, while the death toll has crossed 69,350. There is a lockdown in the countries of the world to avoid this tragedy. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that domestic violence has seen an alarming increase globally during the lockdown.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed to governments around the world to ensure the protection of women during the action to combat the corona virus global epidemic. Guterres issued videos and statements in several languages saying, “Violence is not limited to the battlefield.” Guterres said “the greatest danger for many women and girls is where they should be the safest, in their own homes.”

He said that in the last few weeks, economic and social pressures have increased and in such a situation we have seen an alarming increase in domestic violence globally. “I appeal to all governments to make violence and harassment of women an important part in national action plans against Covid-19,” Guterres said.

Guterres has appealed to build emergency warning systems in medical and ration shops and find safe ways for women who seek help without alerting their perpetrators.

The General Secretary said, “During our efforts to control Covid-19, together we can stop the violence everywhere from the battlefield to the houses and we should stop it.” He appealed for peace in homes around the world.
