Gang leader arrested in Rs 20 lakh Bitcoin scam

Pune : NpNews24 Online  –  Pune Crime News | The Shivajinagar Police have arrested the leader of a gang, which cheated a man by forcing him to pay Rs 19.70 lakh on a bank account by luring him with Bitcoins. He was arrested from Dahiwali in Karjat taluka of Raigad district. Seven mobile phones, 10 SIM cards, 18 account passbooks of various banks, eight debit cards of different banks and a QR code were seized from him. (Pune Crime News)

The office of a 36-year-old man living in Shaniwar Peth is in Shivajinagar. Two members of Mukul’s gang met him at his office. They won his trust. One of the accused asked him to deposit Rs 19.70 lakh in his bank account on the pretext of giving him three Bitcoins. After the complainant demanded the Bitcoins, the accused, without giving the Bitcoins, threatened to kill him. On realising the fraud, the complainant lodged a case at the Shivajinagar Police Station in March 2022.

The police have filed a case against Priyesh Anil Rao alias Shetty alias Mukul (34) from Raigad, Ranjit Jarnail Singh (37) from Raigad, Shabbir Sheikh from Nirmal Nagar, Sujay Paul from Pune and Mangesh Kadam from Gokhale Nagar. Mukul is the mastermind in this transaction of selling Bitcoins and he used to change his name, mobile phone as well as his place of residence from time to time.

Even though there was no clue whatsoever of the accused, police constable Adesh Chalwadi got the photograph of the accused. Later, Sr PI Arvind Mane immediately dispatched a team of cyber squad consisting of API Bajirao Naik, Rupesh Waghmare and Adesh Chalawadi to search for the accused. The police arrested the accused Priyesh Anil Rao alias Shetty alias Mukul from Dahivali in Karjat taluka of Raigad district on Friday. During the search of his home, the police seized seven mobile phones, ten SIM cards, 18 pass books, 8 debit cards and one QR code.

The Shivajinagar police are investigating whether Mukul has cheated using the same modus operandi.

The affected people have been appealed to reach out to the Shivajinagar police. Shabbir Hadradish Shaikh (41) from Nirmal Nagar, who is Mukul’s accomplice in the crime, has also been arrested and the search for the other accused is going on.
